As we celebrate our freedom, we need to realize that we are to protect, preserve, and pass on this great freedom. This freedom we celebrate was earned through the wars that were fought, sweat and tears shed, and lives given. All we have to do to lose this freedom is to forget the foundation on which it was built, ignore our responsibilities, and fail to stand for righteousness.
Calvin Coolidge said: “The real origins and great outlines of our democracy were a result of the religious teachings of the previous period. The intellectual life of our forefathers centered around the meeting house or church. They were a people who were under the influence of a great spiritual development and acquired a great moral power. No other theory is adequate to explain the Declaration of Independence. It is the product of the spiritual insight of the people gained from the Bible.”
I hope and pray that we as Christians will remember, reflect, repent, and renew our commitment to Christ and these ideals He lived and taught. 2 Chronicles 7:14 states, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
